Abstract
In order to find out the reason why Shylock was conventionalized as the embodiment of all that was evil, critical commentary of The Merchant of Venice has centered upon the character of Shylock, who has been interpreted in various ways. This paper does not talk about whether Shylock is a good or bad man. It concentrates on the backgrounds of The Merchant of Venice. The paper is divided into three major parts. The first part is the economic background; the second religious background; and the third literary background. One point should be kept in mind. ie the character of Shylock is created based on some certain background
