21世紀初，機械制造業(yè)發(fā)展的特點是現(xiàn)代化高新技術的綜合利用，其趨勢是四化：即柔性化、敏捷化、智能化和信息化。再也不是以20世紀20～40年代發(fā)展起來的機械學科自身的成就――凸輪及其它機械為基礎，采用專用機床、夾具、刀具、量具組成的流水式生產(chǎn)線――剛性自動化。剛性自動化的缺點是嚴重影響產(chǎn)品的更新?lián)Q代，妨礙采用高新技術，產(chǎn)品在國際市場上缺乏競爭力。目前，我國機械制造業(yè)中，一些國營企業(yè)虧損，產(chǎn)品在國內(nèi)外市場上缺乏競爭力，產(chǎn)品大量積壓，除與經(jīng)營管理體制有關外，與企業(yè)設備陳舊、工程技術人員知識老化有很大關系。
