Abstract
Idioms are one of the important parts of a language. As a language form, idiom has its own characteristics and patterns and is used in high frequency both in written language and in oral language because idioms convey a host of language and cultural information. This paper explores the cultural and linguistic characteristics of English idioms in three parts.
The first part gives details of definition and 10 sources of English idioms including: the Bible, literary masterpieces, Greek and Roman myths, historic affairs, seafaring, agricultural life, daily life, ancient fables, anecdotes and animals' habitual behaviors.
The second part tells the cultural characteristics from both aspects of national and folk characteristics. In national characteristics, English idioms and Chinese idioms have much in common; however, they have more differences because of their geographical environment, history, religion and so on. Compared with Chinese idioms, English idioms reflect its own nation's characteristics. In folk characteristics, most English idioms come from ordinary people, reflect their everyday life, thought value and so on.
And the last part focuses on the linguistic characteristics of English idioms from 3 aspects: figures of speech, integrity styles and euphony styles.
The results demonstrate that learning to use idioms properly is extremely important for non-native speakers to achieve the command of authentic English. As a consequence, further exploring and more researches are to help learners gain mastery over this important aspect of English learning.
Key words: English idioms; Cultural characteristics; Linguistic characteristics;

I am particularly indebted to Professor Guo Xuexia, my supervisor, whose insightful suggestions and constructive comments have contributed a lot to my research. It is under her patient guidance, incisive criticism and detailed revision that this thesis can finally assume its present shape. Without her guidance, the completion of this thesis would not have been possible.
Likewise, I would like to extend my thanks to all my teachers whose lectures have given me considerable instruction and inspiration. They are Professor Qin Guolin, Professor Liao Xuan, Professor Guo Xuexia.
Finally, I owe my gratitude to my colleagues and friends from whom I have received generous help.
