The U.S. Navy completed approximately 10 yards of advanced cycle studies culminating in a competitive request for proposals in 1991. The ICR development contract was awarded to Westinghouse Electric Crop. Marine Division, in Sunnyvale, Calif. The development team includes Westinghouse Rolls-Royce, in London, U.K.; Allied Signal Aerospace Inc., in Torrance, Calif.; and CAE Electronics Ltd., in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The Navy’s ICR timetable supports a ship contract award by 1999, and the first WR-21 engine is scheduled to be on a seagoing by 2004. the WR-21 engines will be used to support both the U.S. Navy new combatant construction and potential allied navy frigate and destroyer programs between 2000 and 2010,
